Turtle Season & Beach Etiquette

A few simple habits keep Fort Myers Beach's sea turtle nesting season safe for wildlife — and keep the beach in good shape for everyone.

When Is Turtle Season?

In Lee County (which includes Fort Myers Beach), sea turtle nesting season runs May 1 through October 31. The Town of Fort Myers Beach's Sea Turtle Conservation Code applies to any property that can produce artificial light visible from the beach during this window — not just beachfront homes.

Verified 2026-08-28 against the Town's official sea turtle page. Exact dates and rules can be updated by the Town — confirm before your trip if visiting during nesting season.

Beach Etiquette Basics

  • • Fill in any holes you dig before leaving the beach — they can trap nesting turtles and hatchlings.
  • • Pack out everything you bring — trash and food scraps can attract predators to nesting areas.
  • • Keep your distance from any marked or roped-off nests.
  • • Beach raking can't begin before 9 AM, and only after daily nest monitoring is complete.

Lighting Rules

Per the Town's Sea Turtle Conservation Code, exterior and interior lights visible from the beach must use long-wavelength bulbs (560 nanometers or greater), be downward-directed, and fully shielded. Draw curtains closed at night during nesting season — artificial light can disorient nesting females and hatchlings, leading them away from the ocean.

Clear the Beach at Night

All beach chairs, umbrellas, tents, and kayaks must be cleared from the beach between 9 PM and 7 AM during nesting season (May 1–October 31) — obstacles can block nesting females and disoriented hatchlings.

A Note for Dog Owners

If you're traveling with a dog, keep leashed walks away from any marked nests and follow all posted beach signage. See the Dog-Friendly Fort Myers Beach guide for the full pet policy.
